Papers : of Paulus Powell, 1848-1868.

The bulk of the collection consists of 58 letters (1848-1868) written to Powell while he served in the Virginia House of Delegates and the U.S. House of Representatives. Topics include the Democratic Party and the U.S. postal service in Virginia, a dinner honoring R.M.T. Hunter and James Murray Mason, the U.S. Naval Academy, and a claim for supplies requisitioned by the C.S.A. Army of Northern Virginia while encamped in Orange County, Va. Also included are three letters (1850-1854) written by or addressed to Samuel Meredith Garland, William Leftwich Goggin, Richard Powell, and John C. Richard. There is also a letter (27 January 1848) from Zachary Taylor to Thomas Simons concerning Maurice K. Simons and the war with Mexico. Completing the collection are a petition (1856) from the Virginia General Assembly to President Franklin Pierce concerning the return of John Smith Nicholas to active duty in the U.S. Navy and three lists (1850) of voters in Albemarle, Greene, Madison, and Orange counties, Va.
